***********

Southwest Valley Literacy Association has been training tutors to teach English literacy and matching them with eager adults for more than 40 years. It is so rewarding for volunteer tutors to see students gain self-worth and pride and become actively involved in their family and community.

Today, the need is greater than ever. The demand for tutors continues to grow as more non-English speaking adults from Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Avondale, Tolleson and Buckeye discover our literacy program. We always have a long list of students waiting for tutors to help them learn how to read, write and speak English.

Imagine how frustrating it is for a non-English speaking adult to perform simple daily tasks such as making a doctor’s appointment, ordering food in a restaurant, or helping their kids with their homework. Imagine now how good it feels when a student lands a new job, gets their driver’s license, or obtains citizenship. It’s through the efforts of our dedicated tutors at Southwest Valley Literacy that we help 200 adults achieve these types of successes each year.

Tutor Training Workshops are offered several times a year. Our last two workshops of the season will take place in April 8 and 15) and June 3 and 10). You do not need to have teaching experience or speak any language other than English. Upon completion of the two-day workshop, you will be certified by ProLiteracy America as a Literacy and ESL tutor.

Consider becoming a “hero” to one of our adult learners today. To learn more about becoming a literacy volunteer, visit www.swvalleyliteracy.org or email us at office@swvalleyliteracy.org.

Jan Cosgrove, President of Southwest Valley Literacy Association, has a Masters in Education and is a Pro Literacy certified trainer.
